Reynolds c1845 - London - Willoughby and Co 9" by 5.5" - ix-xvi, 628pp DETAILS Publisher's blue cloth boards with gilt detail to spine. An illustrated edition of Reynold's popular novel. It includes illustrated title page forty further plates (of 41), and 33 in text illustrations. George William MacArthur Reynolds (July 23, 1814 – June 19, 1879) was a British author and journalist. Reynolds was a prolific writer of popular fiction starting from The Youthful Imposter, published in 1835. Virtually forgotten now, in his lifetime he was more read than Dickens or Thackeray; in his obituary, the trade magazine The Bookseller called Reynolds "the most popular writer of our times" ("Obituary" 600). His best-known work was the long-running serial The Mysteries of London (1844), which borrowed liberally in concept from Eugène Sue's Les Mystères de Paris (The Mysteries of Paris). It sold 40,000 copies a week in penny installments and over a million copies cumulatively before it was issued in bound volumes, enjoying an international circulation in French, German, Italian, and Spanish translations. Although (or because) it was outlawed by the authorities, the German version achieved the status of a cult favourite on the Russian black market. CONDITION The binding is tight and firm and both covers are firmly attached. The front inner hinge is strained but holding. There is some wear to the extremities including some marks to the boards, fading tot he spine and slight loss to the spine by the edges of the spine label. The spine label is heavily rubbed and cracking so is very fragile. Internally the book is generally clean apart from spotting in places and the odd handling mark. The edges of the plates are browned and are a little brittle as is usual with this type of paper. The book begins with the engraved title page and then jumps to page IX which is the start of the contents. All previous pages are missing, including the preface. Plate number 37 is missing. All other plates called for are present. Overall the book is in very good condition. If you want to keep an eye on what is coming up, just add us to your favourites list!
